This event, celebrating the centenary of her birth, looks at Joy’s life as both a professional co-running a creative studio and her role as a mother.
Followed by a ScreenTalk with animation programmer and author, Clare Kitson, BFI Curator Jez Stewart and Batchelor’s daughter, Vivien Halas, chaired by film critic, Brian Sibley.

Halas & Batchelor's The Candlemaker
Something festive, here. The Candlemaker is a 1957 short directed by John Halas and Joy Batchelor for the United Lutheran Church in the US. It was animated by Brian Borthwick, Reg Lodge and Vic Bevis with designs by Philip Stapp; Stapp also co-wrote the film with Joy Batchelor.
The film tells the story of a man who makes candles for the church, and of his son who is too busy playing with his pet mouse to learn to make candles properly himself.
